Once a website has been optimised, the site is submitted to the major directories. The search engine spiders will follow the links to the target site and index it - this is why a full site map is a good idea - once the spider finds the site map it then has unhindered access to all the pages on the site.

The important thing about submission is to get the site into as many directories as possible. There are two reasons for this - the first is that it generates traffic from people visiting the directory and clicking on its links - and the second is that the directory will provide an inbound link to the target site - inbound links being very important to the ranking of the site.
